Have you ever decided to do something, say - start a diet or an exercise program - and then didn't follow through with it?
So why didn't you? Because your logical, conscious mind was not in control! Most people have parts of their lives in which they can quickly and easily make decisions and stick to them. While others have areas where our conscious decisions don't last more than an hour or so. Maybe it's that next piece of chocolate, a slice of cheese cake, or that next cigarette. Maybe it's watching TV instead of exercising or a compulsion of some kind. We consciously decide to do one thing then we turn around and do quite another.
It's our unconscious mind (subconscious) or inner mind that is running those habits. It only when we finally get the subconscious mind on our side that find that we can kick the habit or stay on that exercise program.
Now we can further explore habits on a more technical view by breaking them down into two parts.
The
first part is the habitual behavior. This might be in the form of routines or associations. Routines or rituals are when you always do something at a particular time of the day. Associations are when you connect the habit with something else you might be doing. For example, biting your nails while watching TV, or smoking while on the phone. Smoking and drinking is one association that is very common. Gambling and drinking is another common association.
The second part, is the most addictive aspect of your habit which is the emotional component. Hypnotherapy can work very well in eliminating the emotional component (feelings) of being drawn towards whatever your habit might be. In other words, hypnotherapy can eliminate the urge by getting your subconscious mind to align itself with your conscious desires.
